Shiffman Mobile Device Library:
OVERVIEW
Through the generosity of Thomson Reuters, Wayne State University now has an educational license to the Micromedex Healthcare Series & CareNotes for instructional programs for students and faculty in the health sciences. This web based resource also has content for your Pocket PC or Palm from Thomson Clinical Expert which includes calculators and information on diseases, laboratory tests, drugs, interactions, alternative medicine, toxicology, news and alerts.
At the request of Thomson Reuters, access to Micromedex products has been limited to building use only in the College of Nursing, Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and Scott Hall, and cannot be reached from remote locations off-campus. Thus students are recommended to download Thomson Clinical Xpert to their Mobile Device from the computers in these restricted buildings.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
- Palm 3.5 and higher (memory expansion card support for versions 4.0 and higher)
- Pocket PC 2000 and higher
- PC: any Microsoft Windows version currently supported by Microsoft (e.g. Windows 2000 & XP)
- 25.5 MB for Palm, 25.8 MB for Pocket PC
DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS
(Read the instructions first)Preliminaries: Connect your handheld to a computer in Scott Hall/Appblebaum/Nursing Building and make sure that a connection to the computer has been established with the ActiveSync or HotSync.
- Go to Micromedex (http://www.thomsonhc.com) and click the button "Thomson Healthcare Evidence/Healthcare Series" on the right upper corner
- Click the tab "Handheld PDA" on the menu bar on the MICROMEDEX® Healthcare Series page
- You will get a "Customer Number" on the Thomson Clinical Xpert page. Copy (Select Ctrl C) or make a note of the customer number and follow the instructions to register
- On the "Download Thomson Clinical Xpertô" page, enter the "Customer Number" and follow the instructions on the screen to set up your account
- Use the address listed below as your office or home address. DO NOT USE YOUR ADDRESS as system does not accept it.

- Follow the instructions on the screen to finish your registration. You will get an email from Thomson Clinical Xpert with an embedded link very soon. Click the link embedded in the email to activate your Thomson Clinical Xpert account
Note: if you do not receive an email within 15-20 minutes, the email address you provided may be incorrect. Click "Change my email address" link to change email address.
- Select the products you like to download to your Mobile Device. The default setting includes all products. Click the "Save Changes" button if you make any change(s) to the default setting
Note: Download the primary ones if you do not have enough space for all products. You can revisit this site and download the the data sets you omitted from the inital download when you have addtional space available.
- Click the "Get Installer" link on the upper right corner to download a self-extracting executable file. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Thomson Clinical Xpert to your computer and Mobile Device. The installer will synchronize the product to your Mobile Device via ActiveSync or HotSync automatically.
Note: If your device does not synchronize automatically, be sure to start and complete a full synchronization of the device.
- Now you can run the program on your Mobile Device. Go to your program page and tap "Thomson" to launch the Thomson Clinical Xpert program.
Uninstall the program: Manually delete the program from your Mobile Device
Reinstall the program: Login to the site (http://www.thomsonhc.com/muac/librarian) and follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall the program.
